What is Out of Poverty?
Out of Poverty is a program of personal change that helps individuals in Will and DuPage County take control of their goals, time and money and get out of the downward spiral of poverty and homelessness.
Free classes are provided at our Daybreak Shelter in Joliet and our Lombard Office. The Out of Poverty class takes the participant through 10 sessions for a six or ten week course. The objective of this class is to help participants improve their prospects for a more prosperous future. At graduation, the participant should have the necessary tools and techniques to help them work against hunger, homelessness, unemployment and low self-esteem.
Once they graduate, they leave with tools for their toolkit, such as:
- Relaxation breathing
- Framing problems
- Clustering for clarity
- ABC Analysis
- Goal setting
- Action planning
- Mental rehearsal
- Generating positive self-talk
- Active listening
- Assertion methods
- Self-management skills
- A prosperity plan

What Criteria is Needed to Participate in These Classes?
- In Will County: Must be a resident of Will County only
- In DuPage County: Must be a resident of DuPage County only
- In Grundy County: Must be a resident of Grundy County only
